 In Uncategorized
MINUTES OF THE MEETING DATE: 26TH February, 2016 The meeting started with an opening prayer by 11:20am. Agenda of the meeting: “Business Challenges and the Economy”. Outline of discussions on the agenda are as follows: There has been a decline in the number of students choosing the UK as a study destination, suggestions were made on how to get support from UK institutions to boost interest and stay afloat in business. We proposed a Stakeholders meeting with UK institutions during British Council fair to discuss these concerns, and all members are expected to send invitations to their partner institutions notifying them of the meeting on the 4th March, 2016 at 6pm. We also discussed on the need for government intervention to further strengthen our business activities. A government policy or statement supporting the use of agents could be beneficial to us as Tessy Ajibosin of 3AG gave insight on a proposal submitted to a Government official with the aim of encouraging prospective UK students to apply through agents, instead of direct applications. This will in return encourage forex inflows and revenue generation for the economy as well as boost business activities for agents. She however, mentioned that it is advisable to ensure tax payments are up to date as this initiative could attract attention from FIRS to our business activities. She is to follow-up with the proposal and provide feedback accordingly. The Economy: With the escalating exchange rate of the dollar against the naira and the CBN’s restrictions on foreign exchange quotas, it is advisable to look inwards so as to identify other opportunities within the education sector that needs to be harnessed such as “promoting exchange programs amongst Nigerian institutions and UK institutions”. Business Ethics: there are concerns about UK Institutions paying individuals commission in a bid to meet target numbers. This is seen as a desperate act and very unacceptable to members of the association. We proposed to discuss this matter to the institutions at the forum as it is expected of them to replicate best business practices in Nigeria as obtainable in their country.
